Percy Family History

DNA and the process

yDNA ANALYSIS AND PARTICIPANTS

(subject to Cambridge University and City participation and recommendations)

  • Alan Percy : Brother of Henry 5th Earl of Northumberland and Josceline Percy who started the Cadet Percy Beverley line.  Alan Percy was master of St John College Cambridge and is buried there.  He definitely carried the Louvain-Percy male bloodline.

  • Francis Percy Jnr : Great grandson of Thomas Percy the Gunpowder Plotter, claimed to be de jure Earl of Northumberland and was given a misdirection of descent by the College of Arms (Garter Principal King of Arms Sir William   Dugdale) as descended from Guiscard Percy (died age 7) in the main Percy line.  Francis Percy almost certainly carried the Louvain-Percy male bloodline and claimed descent through the Gunpowder Plotter.  An earlier claimant James Percy claimed the same descent but had been provided with a misdirection of descent by the College of Arms Garter Principal King of Arms Sir  Edward Walker.  Francis Percy is buried at Cambridge.

  • Exhumation and analyses between the two above would establish conclusively if they both carried the Louvain-Percy yDNA (male) and a simple swab from any  of our three living consecutive (6th, 7th and 8th) N.Z. eldest sons would establish absolutely our N.Z. Percy relationship.

  • My London advisor, Brian Piercy (Percy-Piercy family history society) made this recent comment to me “ My feeling at the moment is that the definitive DNA samples must be obtained from the 17th Century tombs of the 8th or 9th Earls or the tombs of their brothers” - Today’s main Percy line do not carry the Louvain—Percy male yDNA which died out in their line in 1670.  Our family are historically bound to Cambridge University and City and if they accept the responsibility for the process we will be guided by them.

Important footnote: Perhaps Brian Piercy, mentioned above, is correct and the 8th or 9th Earls or the tombs of their brothers would be more definitive.  We claim to carry their Louvain-Percy male DNA through their forebears and the present Duke and Earl of Northumberland claim descent through a Seymour who married a Smithson and then changed their name to Percy.

THE PERCYS OF CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY.
(Only those who seem relevant)

ALAN Master of St. John's College 1516-1518.  Son of 4th Earl. Buried Old Chapel of St. Johns 1560. Carried the Louvain-Percy male DNA.

ALGERNON bapt. 1602 St John's 1615 2nd marriage to Elizabeth d.o. Thomas Howard Earl of Sussex.

EDWARD Matric St Clare 1583 (born around 1583) one of the sons of Edward of Beverley ?

FRANCIS sizar of St. John's 1692 (Son of Francis, who claimed to be de jure 8th Earl of Northumberland, sculptor of Cambridge and Mayor 1709) Baptised 1675 Trinity College Cambridge.

THOMAS (The Plotter) Peterhouse 1579 so Edward of Beverley gr. grandson of Henry 4th Earl etc. Ancestor of Percys of Cambridge and Taunton.

ALGERNON matric St. John 1835 second son of Hugh, 2nd Duke of Northumberland he would have been at the same college in Cambridge at the same time as :-

WILLIAM JOHN St. John 1835 so John of Sherborne B.A. 1839 M.A. 1842 etc. Curate of Maperton 1845- 1851. Rector Silton Dorset 1851-8. Author of sermons died 1858.

WILLIAM JOHN EDWARD so above St. John's 1861 also a clergyman.  Our Joseph's younger brother's son and grandson.

Analysis with the above Francis or his father who 'claimed' would be ideal and then with the N.Z. Percys

WHY CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY AND CITY?

Because we believe it is historically incumbent upon our family and historic Cambridge and for the integrity of English history to resolve without doubt the status of the over 300 year old claimed extinct Louvain-Percy male DNA.

(a)  Because Thomas Percy the Gunpowder Plotter, grandson of the 4th Earl of Northumberland was educated at Cambridge University, Peterhouse 1579.

(b)  Because the Gunpowder Plotter's grandson Francis Percy snr. of our Taunton St Mary Magdalene line went to Cambridge to live and while there claimed to be de jure Earl of Northumberland.  He was poisoned (and died) in Oxford on an overnight stay on his way to meet with Algernon Earl of Northumberland.

(c)  Because his son, Francis jnr. the Plotter's great grandson of Cambridge claimed to be the de jure Earl of Northumberland and was given by the London College of Arms a misdirection of descent from Guisard Percy in the main line, who had died age 7 years - see "Pilgrimage for the Truth" he later became Mayor of Cambridge 1709

(d)  Because his son Francis Percy of Cambridge was educated there at St. Johns.

(e)  Because the 4th Earl of Northumberland's 2nd son Alan Percy, master of St. Johns College 1516-1518 is buried at Old Chapel of St. Johns College 1560.  He without question carried the Louvain-Percy male bloodline as did his brother below and the whole Cadet Percy Beverley line. Table III genealogy chart.

(f)  Because Alan Percy's (above) brother Josceline Percy started the Cadet Percy Beverley line.

(g)  Because our own Sherborne relations, through the 2nd son, William John Percy St. John 1835, and William John Edward Percy St. Johns 1865 were educated there.

Letters and documentation have been sent to Cambridge University and City requesting that they undertake an important yDNA(male) research project to establish without doubt by exhumation, and male analysis, if the claimed extinct (for over 300 years) Louvain-Percy male DNA exists today as claimed by our family. In return for conducting these processes, we the 6th, 7th and 8th consecutive New Zealand Percy eldest sons of our direct English and New Zealand lines offered to cede to Cambridge University and City our marketing rights for comparative analyses purposes, which if our male DNA were proven without doubt to be Louvain-Percy may be worth millions.

It is abhorrent to us that after over 3 centuries of 'extinction' and denial of our English and New Zealand families male birthrights that we could the sully their sacrifices by accepting money for their and our Louvain-Percy male DNA.

A reply letter from Cambridge University is pending.

Important:

We are prepared to consider reasonable costs for the analyses process.
